Houston Area Legal Aid Resources

There are a number of legal aid resources here in the Houston Area related to the family law needs of the community. While Justia provides a list of such resources, I compiled my own in an effort to provide the general public with additional information regarding these resources and included resources for those wishing to pursue their own family law case by representing themselves.

Texas Office of the Attorney General Child Support Division (Office 615)

While not truly a legal aid organization, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) does pursue custody and child support orders on behalf of the state. The OAG does not take a position on custody nor does the OAG represent either parent. However, they do put a large number of orders in place. It is important to note that they will not pursue a divorce.

Texas Law Help provides the standard do-it-yourself forms.

Harris County Law Library

The librarians are very nice and can direct you to an appropriate form or resource. The library also allows you to print and is located within a block of the Harris County District Clerk.

1019 Congress Street

Houston, Texas 77002

Tel: 713-755-5183

Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Harris County District Clerk

The District Clerk's Office is where you will file your lawsuit and request that the Constable's Office serve it. They also can provide you with forms such as the civil case information sheet and civil process request form, which they require. I recommend going in person to file a document as you will need to pay the fee, and they do not accept personal checks. Furthermore, they may point out an issue with your paperwork.
